How long has it been? A year, I think...

Anyway, I want to apologise for not updating this blog for so long since I've been so busy and all. But hey, I'm in an essay mood right now, and there's an exam coming up tomorrow on essays, so why not use this opportunity to write something?

Just so you were wondering about my title, it refers to my inconsistency of updating this blog.

Anyway, let's get started!

Discuss the impact of social media today.

The 21st century is the century where Man sees the advancement of technology climb to a higher stage of development. People today are living in a world where technology is advanced and is still on its way to improvement. One of the developments made was social media. Social media has never been different. It made a tremendous impact on society and changes the lives of many drastically. I shall now discuss the impact social media has made and I shall elaborate on it.

Wherever people are, they are constantly, if not always, connected to social media one way or another. Not just that, they are also connected to each other even if they are miles apart. The first advantage social media brings to society that it pulls people closer together. People now do not need to travel to the other end of the world to see the people they love. People can even get to know celebrities without really talking to them. Facebook, Twitter, Skype, these are perfect examples in showing how people are brought together. With just a mere few clicks away, people are able to connect with one another. Though geographically people may be very far apart, but mentally they are just a few steps away. Such unity is made possible due to the help of social media. Without it, people will have a much more difficult time getting in touch with their loved ones. Therefore social impact has made a positive impact to the world as it strengthens the bonds between family, friends and acquaintances.

Think back of the times you use social media. What was the reason of you using it? When people are asked this question, the answer is usually entertainment or that they were looking for something to do. This brings forward the second positive impact social media has brought to society. It provides entertainment to people. Try turning on the television or reading the newspaper or surfing the Net. These actions are not something people dislike doing. In fact, they anticipate it as they know they will  be bombarded by things that will interest them and catch their attention. Without social media, the world will become a less colourful place. No more comedy shows that will make people laugh, no more engaging news published to the newspaper, no more interesting game to be played online. That is why social impact makes a very positive impact to society as it provides entertainment that many cannot do without.

However, every rose has its thorns. Much as social media brings advantages to society, it brings along disadvantages with it as well. Social media is free and vast, anything and everything can be found in it. Some content may be inappropriate and unsuitable for people underage such as children. An example being websites and television shows that exhibit violence and a lot of gore. If children were to see it, they would be affected emotionally. They will either get traumatised by it or they may even harbour interest in it and go to search for related contents. As such, they will receive negative influence and go deeper into the dark side of social media. The worse part is that no one may ever know. By the time they realise they have gotten too deep, it may already be too late. As such social media poses a negative impact on society as it teaches people the wrong things.

In the world, there are many television buffs or internet buffs that constantly spend their time watching television or surfing the internet. However, sometimes they may get too addicted and thus their lives get negatively affected. The second disadvantage is that people get addicted to social media. As they are easily accessible, people will end up spend a lot of time using social media when they could have used the time to do more meaningful things such as exercising or reading. It is unhealthy for them to get addicted as they will end up neglecting their daily lives and do not spend time with their beloved family members and friends. When they get too sucked into social media, it destroys the bridge linking them to reality, negatively affecting many things like their studies or work. Therefore the social media brings negative impact to the world as they will not be able to find a balance between social media and reality.

Though social media today may bring a number of problems, it is undeniable that it causes countless advancements and developments that improve things like human interaction. That is why people should practice self-awareness when using social media in order to get as much benefits and reduce the problems social media may bring them. By doing so, the world will become a better and healthier place to live in and the world will be able to advance as a whole towards a better place.
